Going the Extra Mile in Your Job Can Be More Rewarding Than You Think

Everyone likes to be recognised for doing a good job and improving the efficiency of their workplace.

Land Securities, one of Scotland's largest property companies, is an employer committed to rewarding the dedication shown by its staff and operates a recognition scheme called Values into Action.

The scheme rewards employees whose efforts embody the values of the company. There are five categories that employees can be nominated for: customer service, respect for the individual, integrity, excellence and innovation.

David Smith, Regional Director, Land Securities, said: "Reward schemes help every staff member in a firm to see how their role and actions can affect the performance of the company. We think it is worth recognising the people and teams who go the extra mile and exhibit the core values of the company.

"People are at the heart of any business and we want to reward those whose efforts fuel the success of the company and our employees."

Individuals or teams can be nominated by a member of staff, a consultant, a contractor or even a service partner via the Values into Action website (which can be accessed internally or externally).

Nominations are then assessed by a panel before the winners are presented with their prizes at a special lunch hosted by members of the Senior Management Board of the Land Securities Group PLC.

Prizes include Tiffany gifts, photo-frames, and paperweights. All winners and their nominators are invited to the annual Values in Action ceremony where an annual winner in each of the five core values and the team category are announced and presented with a £1,500 travel voucher.

Among the people who have been recognised for their efforts is Clare Livingston, Marketing Manager at East Kilbride Shopping Centre. Clare was nominated by David Smith in the category of Innovation for her idea of providing display cabinets for retailers within the mall.

David explains: "East Kilbride Shopping Centre is the largest centre under our management in Scotland and is almost a mile long. Having a Zara display cabinet outside H&M and vice versa emphasizes the range of offers throughout the shopping centre. The response from retailers has been fabulous and has increased customer interest and encouraged them to explore the whole mall."

Sandra Watson, Senior Secretary at Land Securities' Glasgow office, also received recognition for putting in some extra hours and helping record a telephone message on a customer information line after the original participant was struck down with illness.

Steve Woods, Telephony Manager, said: "Sandra was asked at the last minute to step in to help me out - this she did without hesitation. Unfortunately the process took a lot longer than had been anticipated but Sandra remained behind to complete the voice recording for me and saved the day."

In 2006, 227 nominations were received through Values into Action. This large number demonstrates the Group's determination to make employees committed, recognised and motivated.
